Introduction
The right of Stephen Cottrell to be identified as Author of this work has been asserted by him in accordance with the Copyright, Design and Patents Act 1988.
Welcome to my website. I haven't done much on the site over the last year but I'm back on the trail again now. There will be much more to come including more photographs but also personal stories and recollections. I am sure that you will find something of interest here about St Vincent & the Grenadines or Madeira and of course my extended family. The site will be updated on a regular basis with both additions and changes to keep the content as fresh as I can.
The style of the site regarding the histories is very much ‘warts and all’ and is intended to be an honest reflection of the various histories. What detail is not mentioned here will be in a separate manuscript which will be published at a later date.
Cheryl has circulated copies of Joao Sardinha de Paivas picture to quite a few family members, this being the only picture that survived. It was given to Cheryls dad Monty by his father, and Monty made a copy for his brother Winston. No other copies of this picture existed and it has been in Cheryls possesion along with her Grandfather Edgerton's memorandum, since her dad died in 1986. She fortunately, has some of his papers, she tried getting more of his documents of Sardine's bakery but was refused and I believe these were destroyed.
Fortunately we have been able to acquire a picture of Joao Sardinha de Paiva's wife Mathilda but the large and small pictures that were removed from Sisters Cottage at Camden Park have still not come to light. If anyone can provide information as to the whereabouts of these it would be most welcome.
We have traveled to Madeira many times in search of Sardine and de Sousa family roots and have made headway in some of the family branches but still have a long way to go. We will get there but it's very difficult in some cases without knowing the parental names.
I have to say that I am so proud of the enormous effort Cheryl has put into researching her family through the internet, anecdotal evidence and not least through talking to leads that she has been given to verify as best can be done the relationships, this is not a cheap pursuit. She has currently over 3100 individuals on her family tree.
I have put some of the surnames on just for now, and if anyone out there who is familiar with any of the names and is from Madeira, please feel free to contact me at my mail address.
My Aims
There are a number of goals for this site.
Firstly to celebrate the life of Cheryls father Joffre Nicholas Montmorency Sardine and his wife Hyacinth. He was a man who worked hard all his life from age 14 and helped everyone he could.
Secondly to look at the history of the Sardine name and other family roots and the islands of St Vincent and the Grenadines and Madeira where they have primarily hailed from and grown up.
Third, to try and lay to rest some of the turmoil Cheryl feels from the injustices meted out to the Sardine family and not so pleasant experiences met by Cheryl as she was growing. I must say that for some years now members of Cheryls family have tried to bully her. One told her they would ring all the family around the world whereever they are, and turn them against her. This threat has been carried out. Also criticism from some of the overseas cousins, some of which have never met her or even lived on St Vincent. In short, wanting to sweep it under the carpet rather than embrace the truth. Nobody can prevent a person from telling their life story.
Fourth, to post some family and historic photographs.
Lastly, to help my visitors with some useful location and genealogy links.
There will also be some miscellaneous content which I hope you will find of interest.
Your Hosts
I am Steve and am your host for this site. My interests and those of my wife Cheryl are of course the genealogy of our families and Cheryl also is keen on gardening and threadwork such as Cross stitch and Tapestry. Cheryl is very committed to research into the family tree and is constantly adding new individuals and history to it. She moved to the UK in 1983 where she still resides.
I would ask all visitors to respect the copyright of the content of this site.
John Sardine around 1885. Crosstitched by Cheryl his Great GrandDaughter
Mathilda de Souza Sardine.
The two pictures above, John Sardine de Paiva and his wife Mathilda, are crosstitched and each one was stitched with DMC silk thread and has around 89 thousand stitches. Cheryl has included beads in Mathilda's picture to add a little extra dimension to her necklace and earings when looking at the natural picture. A lot of work, not to mention the time and cost of framing them.
The original picture of Mathilda from which the crosstitich was made had been damaged near the mouth area, and was repaired.
